National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Karnataka

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is an institution founded by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for Undergraduate and University Legal Education in India. It is the first national law university to have been established. According to estimates of its popularity, the school is the most prestigious law school in India. Located in Bangalore, NLSIU was established by law passed by the Karnataka State Legislative Assembly. The school was officially founded on August 29, 1987. The law provides that the chief justice of India is responsible for the host school. The vice-chancellor, is the chief administrator of the school.

The first Chair of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for Refugee Law was established in 1995 at the National School of Law, University of India, Bangalore. Refugee Law Researcher Subramanya Nagarajarao has been appointed to this chair. During his tenure, he continued his research on refugees and two of his books on this subject were published in 2004.
