Extinction (2018 film)

Extinction is an American sci-fi and suspense film directed by Ben Young and written by Spenser Cohen, Eric Heisserer and Brad Kane. It stars Lizzy Caplan, Michael Peña, Mike Colter, Lilly Aspell, Emma Booth, Israel Broussard, and Lex Shrapnel. It was released on Netflix on July 27, 2018.

In December 2013, it was revealed that the script for Extinction, written by Spenser Cohen, had been included in the 2013 blacklist of the best non-produced screenplays in Hollywood, voted by more than 250 studio executives. In January 2014, Joe Johnston joined to direct the tape, and in September 2016, it was revealed that James McAvoy was "in talks" to star.

In October 2016, Ben Young joined to direct the film, having Johnston left the project long ago. In January 2017, it was announced that Michael Peña would star in the role that would originally be McAvoy's. In February 2017, Universal Pictures acquired the distribution rights, with the main production planned to start in April 2017. In March 2017, Lizzy Caplan and Israel Broussard joined the cast, while Mike Colter and Lex Shrapnel was incorporated in April, and Emma Booth in May.

Extinción was released on July 27, 2018, on Netflix. The film would originally be released in theaters on January 26, 2018, by Universal Pictures, but was removed from the premiere list. Subsequently, in February 2018, it was announced that Netflix had acquired the rights.

Synopsis

Peter, an engineer, has recurring nightmares in which he and everyone he meets suffer violent and alien confrontations with an unknown enemy. He reluctantly visits a clinic to receive psychiatric help, only to find a patient there who reveals that he is having the same visions, which makes Peter believe his visions are of an upcoming invasion.

That night, the invading spacecraft open fire on the city, causing significant damage. Peter and his wife, Alice, barrel their apartment amid the sounds of killing the ground troops. A soldier dressed in armor breaks the barricade and finds Lucy, one of Peter and Alice's daughters, hidden under a table. The soldier pauses to examine the girl, and that distraction allows Peter and Alice to immobilize the soldier. Peter, now armed with the soldier's weapon, takes his family out of the building.

Based on his visions, Peter and his family agree to seek refuge in the factory where Peter works. You can ignore the biometric authentication of the rifle and kill the soldiers watching the exit of the apartment building. They go to the entrance of a tunnel to travel safely to the factory, but not before Alice is injured by a bomb explosion. When they regroup, the soldier of his apartment appears, having tracked them with a homing signal in the rifle that Peter took. To Peter's surprise, the soldier takes off his helmet and looks human. Pedro forces the soldier to take Alicia to the factory. There, his boss David explains that the invasion has been expected for many years. A doctor examines Alicia but informs Peter that he can't save her. While David's men drag the invading soldier to execute him, he yells at Peter that he can save Alice. Peter agrees to stay with the soldier to save Alice. David will evacuate his children to a subway station where a transport train awaits them to take them to an off-site base.

The soldier surprises Peter by revealing that Alice is a synthetic (AI). To save Alicia, she needs an alternative source of power: Peter himself. Under the soldier's guidance, Peter opens his own chest with a pocket knife, confirming that he is also a synthetic. The soldier connects a cable between the two androids and Peter passes out, experiencing in detail what he had thought were visions of the future, but in reality they are memories of a past war. Fearing that Android ("synthetic") workers can face humans, the military attacks unarmed synthetics. Synthetics counterattack and eventually expel all humans from the planet. To deal with the guilt of what they have done and to avoid living in fear of human reprisals,

Peter wakes up and the soldier, Miles, explains that humans have been living on Mars for 50 years. He had expected the synthesizers to be monsters, not families with children. Peter and Alice separate amicably with Miles to find their daughters while humans break the roof of the factory. When everyone leaves on the train, David explains that he and a handful of other synthetics kept their memories to be prepared for the inevitable return of humans. Peter suggests that someday there could be peace between humans and synthetics.
