On November 16, 2011 she had a daughter. Before becoming an actress, she was a student of architecture and model. She speaks many languages: English, Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, and Marathi, and her mother tongue is Tulu, which is only spoken by two million people.

Rai was born into a Tulu language family, in Mangalore, Karnataka. Her father, Krishnaraj, was an Army biologist, while her mother, Brinda, is a housewife. She has an older brother, Aditya Rai, who is an engineer in the merchant marine. Rai's Dil Ka Rishta film (2003) was co-produced by her brother and co-written by her mother. The family moved to Mumbai, where Rai attended Arya Vidya Mandir High School. Rai did her intermediate education at Jai Hind University for one year, and then joined the DG Ruparel College in Matunga, securing 90 percent on the HSC exams. She trained in classical dance and music for five years during her teens. Her favorite subject was zoology, so she initially considered studying a career in medicine. Then, with plans to become an architect, she enrolled in Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture, but later gave up her education to pursue a career in modeling.
In 1991, Rai won an international model contest (organized by Ford) and was finally presented in the North American edition of Vogue. In the 1998 big-budget Tamil Romantic drama, Jeans directed by S. Shankar, Rai appeared alongside Prashanth and Nassar. She played Madhumita, a young woman who accompanies her sick grandmother to the United States to seek medical attention. The film was a commercial success, and Rai received praise for her acting and dancing. Unlike Iruvar, Rai has practiced and dubbed her own lines in the film. Jeans was later presented as the official entry of India for the Academy Awards for 1998. Her second role in Bollywood was in 1999 in the Melodrama Aa Ab Laut Chalen, directed by Rishi Kapoor. The film was a critical failure and had a lower than average performance at the box office. On behalf of Pooja Walia, a traditional Indian woman living in the United States, Rai met with negative criticism. In 1999, Rai participated in a world tour called Magnificent Five, along with Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Akshaye Khanna and Twinkle Khanna. In the same year, she was appointed as Longines Ambassador of Elegance. that in 2003 she became the first Indian actress to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. in the same year she became an ambassador for the world brand of L'Oréal, along with Andie MacDowell, Eva Longoria and Penelope Cruz. Rai is the brand ambassador for the Bank Association eye of the national campaign of India to promote eye donation in India. In 2005 she became an ambassador for the polio pulse brand, a campaign established by the Government of India in 1994 to eradicate polio in India. In the same year, Rai was appointed spokesperson for the International Year of Microcredit, raising awareness of the main objectives and priorities of the United Nations poverty alleviation efforts.
